INSERTION
Lesser trochanter of femur.
ACTION
Flexes hip and lateral flexion the lumbar vertebral column if hip is fixed.

Femoral (Iliacus) and Lumbar plexus (Psoas).
Iliacus

ORIGIN
Iliac fossa.
INSERTION
Lesser trochanter of the femur.
ACTION
Flexes hip.
INNERVATION
Femoral.
Psoas Major

ORIGIN
Transverse processes of T12 – L5.
INSERTION
Lesser trochanter of the femur.
ACTION
Flexes hip.
INNERVATION
Lumbar plexus.
Tensor Fasciae Latae

ORIGIN
Anterior iliac crest and ASIS.
INSERTION
Iliotibial Band.
ACTION
Medially rotates and abducts thigh/hip, stabilizes extended knee, and flexes hip joint.
INNERVATION
Superior gluteal.
Gluteus Maximus

ORIGIN
Gluteal surface of ilium, lumbar fascia at iliac crest, sacrotuberus ligament, and sacrum.
INSERTION
Gluteal tuberosity of the femur (upper fibers) and iliotibial tract (lower fibers).
ACTION
Extends and laterally rotates thigh/hip, abducts thigh/hip, and adducts thigh/hip (lower fibers).
INNERVATION
Inferior gluteal.
Gluteus Medius

ORIGIN
Outer surface of ilium, inferior to gluteus maximus.
INSERTION
Greater trochanter of the femur.
ACTION
Abducts and medially rotates thigh/hip.
INNERVATION
Superior gluteal.
Gluteus Minimus

ORIGIN
Outer surface of ilium. Between the anterior gluteal line and inferior gluteal line of the ilium, under gluteus medius.
INSERTION
Greater trochanter of femur.
ACTION
Abducts and medially rotates hip/thigh.
INNERVATION
Superior gluteal.
Piriformis

ORIGIN
Anterior surface of sacrum.
INSERTION
Greater trochanter of femur.
ACTION
Laterally rotates thigh/hip.
INNERVATION
Sacral.
Gemellus Superior

ORIGIN
Spine of ischium.
INSERTION
The upper border of greater trochanter of femur.
ACTION
Laterally rotates hip/thigh.
INNERVATION
Sacral.
Obturator Externus

ORIGIN
Lateral surface of obturator membrane, ramus of pubis, and ramus of ischium.
INSERTION
Medial surface of greater trochanter or trochanteric fossa of femur.
ACTION
Laterally rotates thigh/hip.
INNERVATION
Obturator.
Quadratus Femoris

ORIGIN
Ischial tuberosity.
INSERTION
Quadrate tubercle of femur and intertrochanteric crest of proximal posterior femur.
ACTION
Lateral rotation of thigh/hip.
INNERVATION
Sacral.
Pectineus

ORIGIN
Pubic ramus (superior).
INSERTION
Shaft of femur, below lesser trochanter, on pectinial line.
ACTION
Adducts and flexes thigh/hip, assists with medial/lateral rotation.
INNERVATION
Femoral (some from obturator).
Adductor Brevis

ORIGIN
Pubic ramus (inferior).
INSERTION
Linea aspera of the femur.
ACTION
Adducts and flexes thigh/hip, assists with lateral rotation.
INNERVATION
Obturator.
Adductor Longus

ORIGIN
Pubic ramus or pubic tubercle.
INSERTION
Linea aspera of the femur.
ACTION
Adducts and flexes thigh/hip, assists with medial rotation.
INNERVATION
Obturator.
Adductor Magnus

ORIGIN
The tuberosity of the ischium. Pubic Ramus and ramus of ischium.
INSERTION
Linea aspera and adductor tubercle of femur.
ACTION
Adduction of hip/thigh, flexion of hip/thigh, and extension of hip/thigh.
INNERVATION
Obturator and Sciatic.
Gracilis

ORIGIN
Pubic Ramus and ramus of ischium.
INSERTION
Proximal medial shaft of tibia (Pes Anserinus tendon)
ACTION
Adducts the thigh/hip, assists with knee flexion.
INNERVATION
Obturator.
