Muscles that MOVE the spine Flashcards
Erector Spinae (Iliocostalis)

ORIGIN
Common lumbar tendon and posterior surface of ribs.
INSERTION
Posterior surface of ribs and transverse processes of some lumbar and lower cervical vertebrae.
ACTION
Bilaterally: Extention of the vertebral column. Unilaterally: Lateral flexion of the vertebral column to the same side.
INNERVATION
Spinal.
Erector Spinae (Longissimus)

ORIGIN
Transverse processes of lumbar and thoracic vertebrae.
INSERTION
Transverse processes, ribs, and mastoid process of temporal bone.
ACTION
Bilaterally: Extention of the vertebral column. Unilaterally: Lateral flexion of the vertebral column to the same side.
INNERVATION
Spinal.
Erector Spinae (Spinalis)

ORIGIN
Spinous processes of cervical and thoracic vertebrae.
INSERTION
Spinous processes of cervical and thoracic vertebrae.
ACTION
Bilaterally: Extention of the vertebral column. Unilaterally: Lateral flexion of the vertebral column to the same side.
INNERVATION
Spinal.
Multifidus

ORIGIN
Sacrum, PSIS, and transverse processes lumbar, thoracic, and cervical vertebrae.
INSERTION
Spinous processes of bones 2-4 above origin.
ACTION
Extension, lateral flexion, and rotation of the spine.
INNERVATION
Spinal.
Rotatores

ORIGIN
Transverse process of each vertebrae.
INSERTION
Lamina of the vertebra above the origin.
ACTION
Rotates the vertebral column to the opposite side and postural control.
INNERVATION
Spinal.
Quadratus Lumborum

ORIGIN
Posterior border of iliac crest.
INSERTION
12th rib, transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae.
ACTION
Lateral flexion of vertebral column, hip elevation, extension of vertebral column, and fixes last rib during expiration.
INNERVATION
Lumbar plexus.
