Muscles of the Thorax and Abdomen: Muscles of the Thoracic Wall Flashcards
Pectoralis Major Proximal Attachment
Clavicular head: Medial end of the clavicle
Sternocostal head: Anterior sternum and costal cartilages of the first 6 ribs
Pectoralis Major Distal Attachment
Lateral lip of the intertubercular groove of the humerus
Pectoralis Major Innervation
Medial and lateral pectoral nerves [C5,C6,C7,*C8,T1]
Pectoralis Major Action
All fibers: Medially rotate the shoulder Adduct the shoulder Clavicular head: -Flexes the shoulder -Horizontally adducts the shoulder Sternocostal head: -Extends the shoulder
Pectoralis Minor Proximal Attachment
Ribs 3-5
Pectoralis Minor Distal Attachment
Coracoid process of the scapula
Pectoralis Minor Innervation
Medial pectoral [C8,T1]
Pectoralis Minor Action
Tilts the scapula anteriorly
Depresses the shoulder girdle
Assists with:
-Elevation of ribs during forced inhalation
Subclavius Proximal Attachment
Junction of the 1st rib and 1st costal cartilage
Subclavius Distal Attachment
Inferior surface of the middle of the clavicle
Subclavius Innervation
Nerve to subclavius [*C5,C6]
Subclavius Action
Depresses the clavicle
Stabilizes the sternoclavicular joint
External Intercostal Proximal Attachment
Inferior border of the ribs above
External Intercostal Distal Attachment
Superior border of the ribs below
External Intercostal Innervation
Intercostal nerves T1-T11
External Intercostal Action
Elevates ribs to assist with inhalation
Internal Intercostal Proximal Attachment
Inferior border of the ribs above
Internal Intercostal Distal Attachment
Superior border of the ribs below
Internal Intercostal Innervation
Intercostal nerves T1-T11
Internal Intercostal Action
Depresses ribs to assist with exhalation
Innermost Intercostal Proximal Attachment
Inferior border of the ribs above
Innermost Intercostal Distal Attachment
Superior border of the ribs below
Innermost Intercostal Innervation
Intercostal nerves T1-T11
Innermost Intercostal Action
Probably depresses ribs to assist with exhalation
Transversus Thoracis Proximal Attachment
Inner surface of the sternum
Transversus Thoracis Distal Attachment
Inner surfaces of costal cartilages 2-6
Transversus Thoracis Innervation
Intercostal nerves 2-6
Transversus Thoracis Action
Depresses ribs to assist with exhalation
Diaphragm Proximal Attachment
Xiphoid process, costal margins, fascia over the quadratus lumborum and psoas major mm., and vertebral bodies L1-L3
Diaphragm Distal Attachment
Central tendon of the diaphragm
Diaphragm Innervation
Phrenic nerve (C3-C5)
Diaphragm Action
Draws the central tendon downward during inspiration
