muscles of the pelvic diaphrgam Flashcards
what is the attachment of levator ani muscle?
the ischial spine, posterior of pubis, and the tendinous thickening at the obturator internus meeting
what is the ligament that connects coccyx and the levator ani?
anococcygeal
what is the u shaped cavity at the anterior of the anus?
it’s called the urogenital hiatus
what is the insertion of the levator ani?
the anterior: superior portion of perineal membrane
the posterior: around the anal canal and the anococcygeal ligament
what are the innervations of the levator ani?
anterior rami of the S2 and the pudendal nerve S2-S4
what is the function of the levator ani?
forms the pelvic floor, supports the viscera, maintains the angle between rectum and anus, reinforces the external anal sphincter and the vaginal sphincter (for women)
how does the pelvic diphraghm muscles help with defecation? (explain the whole process)
- laryngeal closing stabilizes diaphragm
- anterior abdominal muscles compressed the abdominal contents
- puborectalis (of the coccygeus) muscle relaxes so that the anorectal angle becomes less acute
- longitudinal rectal muscles contract until the distal portion of feces shows
- the levator ani returns the angle of the anorectal junction
what is the cause for levator ani?
arcus tendon inflammation causing spasms of the levator ani
how would you treat levator ani with meds?
cyclobenzaprine, botox A
what are the symptoms of levator ani syndrome?
partial defecation, burning pain 2 inch from the anus
what is the duration of the spasm?
> 30 mins
what is the acute variation of LAS?
proctalgia fugax
