Muscles of the neck Flashcards
Platysma Rough origin
Subcutaneous fascia covering the pectoralis major and deltoid muscles
Platysma Rough Insertion
Lower part of the mandible and subcutaneous fascia and muscles of the jaw and mouth
Platysma Innervation
Cervial branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
Platysma Action
Draws down the lower lip and angle of mouth, tenses skin of neck; helps depress mandible
Sternocleidomastoid Origin
Sternal Head: Manubrium of sternum
Clavicular Head: Medial 3rd of superior border of clavicle
Sternocleidomastoid insertion
Mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral 1/2 of superior nuchal line
Sternocleidomastoid Innervation
Accessory Nerve (CN XI) and branches of cervical spinal nerve (C2-C4)
Sternocleidomastoid Action
Unilateral contraction - lateral neck flexion to same side and rotation to opposite side
Bilateral contraction - Neck flexion; with head fixed assists in elevating the thorax during forced inspiration
Anterior scalene Origin
Anterior tubercle of the transverse processes of C3-C6
Anterior scalene Insertion
Scalene tubercle and upper surface of first rib
Anterior scalene Innervation
Ventral Rami of C4-C7
Anterior scalene Action
Elevation of first rib, lateral and forward flexion of neck
Middle Scalene Origin
Posterior tubercles of the transverse process of C2-C7
Middle Scalene Insertion
Upper surface of the first rib, posterior to groove for subclavian artery
Middle Scalene Innervation
Ventral Rami of C3-C7
Middle Scalene Action
Raises first Rib; lateral neck flexion
Posterior Scalene Origin
Posterior tubercles of the transverse process of C4-C6
Posterior Scalene Insertion
Superior surface of second rib
Posterior Scalene Innervation
Ventral Rami C5-C7
Posterior Scalene Action
Raises 2nd rib; lateral neck flexion
Digastric Origin
Temporal bone
Digastric Insertion
Mandible
Digastric Innervation
Anterior Belly - Mandibular Nerve (CN V3)
Posterior Belly - Cervical Branch of the Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Digastric Action
Elevates and steadies the hyoid bone during swallowing and speech; If hyoid is fixed, helps open the mouth and depresses the madible
Stylohyoid Rough Origin
Styloid process of temporal bone
Stylohyoid Rough Insertion
Body of hyoid bone at junction of greater cornu
Stylohyoid Innervation
Cervical branch of facial nerve (CNVII)
Stylohyoid Action
Elevates and retracts the hyoid elongating the floor of the mouth during swallowing
Mylohyoid Rough Origin
Mylohyoid line of Mandible
Mylohyoid Rough Insertion
Upper border of Hyoid bone and median raphe
Mylohyoid Innervation
Mandibular nerve (CN V3)
Mylohyoid Action
Elevates Hyoid bone and raises floor of mouth; together with opposite side, forms floor of mouth
Geniohyoid Rough origin
Inferior Mental spine on inner surface of mandible
Geniohyoid Rough insertion
Anterior surface of body of hyoid bone
Geniohyoid Innervation
First Cervical Nerve (C1)
Geniohyoid action
Pulls hyoid bone superiorly and anteriorly shortening the floor of the mouth; pulls mandible down and inwards when hyoid bone is fixed
Sternohyoid Origin
Posterior aspect of sternoclavicular joint and manubrium of sternum
Sternohyoid Insertion
lower margin of the body of the hyoid bone
Sternohyoid Innervation
Ansa Cervicalis (c1-C3)
Sternohyoid Action
Depresses hyoid bone after swallowing
Omohyoid Rough Origin
Inferior belly: superior border of scapula medial to suprascaular notch
Superior belly: Tendon of inferior belly near Sternocleidomastoid
Omohyoid Rough Insertion
Inferior belly: Ends as a tendon (bound to clavicle by central tendon)
Superior belly: Inserts on lower border of hyoid bone
Omohyoid Innervation
Ansa Cervicalis (C1-C3)
Omohyoid Action
Depresses and retracts the Hyoid bone.
Sternothyroid Origin
Posterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Sternothyroid Insertion
Oblique line on lamina of thyroid cartilage
Sternothyroid Innervation
Ansa Cervicalis (C1-C3)
Sternothyroid Action
Depresses Larynx
Thyrohyoid Origin
Oblique line ont he lamina of the thyroid cartilage
Thyrohyoid Insertion
Greater cornu and body of hyoid bone
Thyrohyoid Innervation
First cervical Nerve (C1)
Thyrohyoid Action
Depresses Hyoid; and elevates larynx if hyoid is fixed
