Muscles of the leg Flashcards
What the muscles of the anterior leg ?
0Extensor Digitorium Longus - (EDL) - extends 4 lateral metatarsals.
0Extensor Hallicus Longus - (EHL) - raise big toe.
0Tibialis Anterior- Inversion ( pull inner aspect of foot up) -
0 Fibularis Tertius - foot eversion
* does not exist in everyone - comes off EDL and inserts onto metarsal 5.
ALL involved in Dorsiflexion.
TA - located on lateral surface of Tibia.
Inserts onto medial surface of foot
EDL - inserts on 4 lateral metatarsals
EHL - inserts onto big toe.
What nerve innervates the Anterior leg ?
Deep fibular (peroneal) nerve - branch of common fibular nerve.
What is foot drop ?
Permanent foot Plantarflexion.
Damage to the common fibular nerve thus deep fibular.
Action of muscles in posterior nerve unopposed.
Interfere with walking - person may flick foor outwards while walking - Eversion Fliok.
What the muscles of the Lateral leg ?
Places of attachment
What do they do ?
0 Fibularis Longus
0 Fibularis Brevis
- Both pass btw lateral malleolus & Calcenous
Brevis shorter - attaches to lateral surface of foot . Longus cross plantar surface of foot ( sole ) attaches to medial surface.
INVOLVED IN EVERSION & PLANTARFLEXION
What nerve innervates the Lateral leg ?
Superfical Fibular ( peroneal) nerve - branch of common fibular nerve .
Muscles involved in enversion of foot ?
Fibularis Brevis
Fibularis Longus
Fibularis Tertius
What the muscles of the Posterior leg?
INNERVATION
2 compartments - Superfical and Deep
SUPERFICAL
0 Soleus
0 Gastrocnemius - 2 heads (Lateral & medial )- crosses knee
0 Calceneal tendon - provides attachment of the superfical posterior muscles to calceneous
0 Plantaris - crosses knee - absent in 10 % of pl.
- ALL involved in Plantaflexion
Plantaris & Gastroconemius - knee flexion as well - cross knee
ORDER OF THE MUSCLES Most superfical - Gastro - Plantaris - Calcaneous tendon - Soleus
DEEP
0 Tibilalis Posterior - pases posteriorly to medial malleolus - attaches to plantar surface of tarsal bones (sole) - inversion of foot
0 Flexor Digatorium Longus - attaches to plantar surface of lateral 4 toes. - flexion of toes
0 Flexor Hallicus Longus - attaches to plantar surface of big toe. - felxion of big toe.
- INVOLVED IN PLANTARFLEXION
0 Popliteus - rotate femur laterally on femur - unlock knee joint - allow flexion.
all innervated by TIBIAL N.
Mucles involved in Plantarflexion of the foot ?
Muscles of posterior and lateral compartment.
Mucles involved in Dosiflexion of the foot ?
Muscles of anterior compartment.
What compartement involved mostly in eversion of foot ?
Lateral
What compartement involved mostly in inversion of foot ?
Posterior
