Muscles of the knee, ankle and foot Flashcards
What is the function of the anterior muscles of the knee and name all of them.
The anterior muscles extends the knees and contain the quadriceps femoris(Rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis) and sartorius. The quadriceps femoris group all share the same patellar tendon.
What is the function of the posterior muscles of the knees and name all of them.
The posterior muscles of the knees function to flex the knees, they contain the hamstring group(Bicep femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus)(All of their tendons form a triangular space known as the popliteal space)
What is the function of the medial compartment of our knees and name all of them.
They adduct the knees. They contain the adductor brevis, longus, magnus, pectinius and gracilis(which also flexes the knees)
What are the movements allowed at the ankle joint
Dorsiflexion and plantarflexion
What are the movements allowed at the subtalar joint?
Inversion and eversion
Which part of our body controls the movements of our foot and ankles? Name their locations and functions.
The muscles of the lower leg controls the movements of the foot and ankles. They are separated into 3 different compartments, anterior which extends the toes, dorsiflexes and inverts the foot. Posterior which flexes toes and plantarflexes the foot. Lateral compartments which everts the foot and plantarflexes the foot.
What are the posterior muscles of our lower leg, what are their functions and similarity?
Gastrocnemius and soleus are the muscles of the lower leg that makes up the bulk of our calves, they share the same achilles tendon, and are both plantarflexers.
The muscles of our calves are individually focused on which type of exercises?
The gastrocnemius is the sole focus of standing calf exercises while the soleus is the sole focus of sitting calf exercises.
