Connective Tissues Flashcards
What are the properties of collagen fibers and their function?
Their properties are inextensibility and tensile strength, they exist due to Straiton and crimps(Have a limited extension of only 3%)
Their function include resisting stretch and inextensibility.
What are the structures related to personal training?
Fasciae, tendons and ligaments
What is the function of a tendon? What happens if you stretch a tendon too much?
They transmit force from muscle to bone to produce movement. Tendons deform when a stretch force is applied. This is called a load deformation curve. Stretching the tendon beyond its yield point will cause permanent length changes and structural integrity.
What is the function of ligaments? What do they consist of and why?
Ligaments attach bone to bone. They consists of a greater mixture of elastic and collagen fibers woven together. Hence giving ligaments a pliant and flexible structure but a strong, defensive and inextensible against forces.
What is the relative contribution of soft tissues to the total resistance of joint movement?
Joint capsules - 47%
Muscle(Fascia) - 41%
Tendons - 10%
Skin - 2%
