Muscles of the elbow, wrist and torso. Flashcards

1
Q

Which bones are responsible for the supination and pronation of the forearm? Where do the actions of the elbow come from?

A

Radius and Ulna. The actions of elbow comes from contractions of muscles from the upper arm.

Q

What is the function of the triceps brachii?

A

Triceps brachii is the primary extensor of the elbow. Its long head is also a weak extensor of the shoulder as it originates on the shoulder.

Q

Where do most of the muscles that move the wrist originate from? What are their functions and locations?

A

Most of the muscles that move the wrist originate from the distal end of the humerus. The anterior muscles originate from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and serve as flexors and pronators of the forearm. The posterior muscles originate on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. And serves as an extensor of the wrist and supinates the forearms. +

Q

What do the major muscles of the torso include and what are their functions to the spine?

A

The major muscles include muscles of the abdominal wall and the posterior surface of the spine. Their function is to stabilise, support and move the spine.

Q

What is the function of the rectus abdominus?

A

Q

What is the function of the external obliques and the internal obliques? How do they work together?

A

Their functions are to rotate and bilaterally flex the spine. The difference between them is that the external obliques run downwards and medially while the internal obliques run upwards and medially. They both work together during the rotation of the trunk. For example, during a left rotation, the left external obliques will simultaneously contract with the right internal obliques.
