Cardiovascular system Flashcards

Learn how structure of the cardiovascular system and how blood moves

1
Q

What are the 4 Structural levels of the body?
Briefly describe them

A

Cells, Tissues, Organs, Systems
Organs are two or more tissues that combine together. Systems are organs that act together cooperatively to achieve a single goal.

Q

Circulatory system: How is blood circulated, explain both systemic and pulmonary

A

Deoxygenated blood comes to the right atrium through the inferior vena cava and is propelled through the pulmonary arteries by the right ventricle to the lungs. Blood then exchanges carbon dioxide for a new set of oxygen and comes back to the left atrium through the pulmonary veins. Then, it leads to the rest of the body when propelled by left ventricle to aorta to complete systemic circulation.

Q

Circulatory system: What is the cardiac cycle

A

It is the beginning of one heartbeat to the next. The left and right side during this period acts simultaneously meaning they contract together (Systole) and relax together(Diastole). During systole, blood is released from the ventricle, and during diastole, blood is flowing into the ventricle. All of this happens in approx 0.1s from each other.
