Q

Temporalis

A

inferior temporal line, temporal fossa, and temporalis fascia

coronoid process and anterior border of mandibular ramus

anterior & middle
fibers: mandibular elevation
posterior fibers: mandibular retrusion;
also acts in side-to-
side movement of mandible

Q

Lateral (external) Pterygoid

A

upper head: infra- temporal part of
greater wing of sphenoid;
lower head: lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate (lamina)

anterior neck of mandibular condyle ,
anterior portion of disc of TMJ, and capsule of TMJ

mandibular (and articular disc protraction; with ipsilateral medial pterygoid, rotates mandible around axis of opposite condyle

Q

Medial (internal) Pterygoid

A

medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate
(lamina), pyramidal process of palatine bone, and a small slip from tuberosity of the maxilla

medial surface of ramus and lower
angle of the mandible

mandibular elevation; assists lateral pterygoid
in mandibular protrusion; alternating with contra-
lateral medial pterygoid, produces side to side movement of mandible; acting with ipsilateral lateral pterygoid, rotates mandible around axis of opposite condyle

Medial (internal) pterygoid N. of V3
