Muscles Of Mastication Flashcards
Temporalis
Origin: entire temporal fascia and fossa
Insertion: Anterior border, apex, posterior border, and internal surface of coronoid process of the mandible and anterior border of the ramus of the mandible
Action: Elevates the mandible at the TMJ, retracts mandible
Masseter Superficial Layer
O: Inferior margins of the zygomatic arch
I: Superficial Layer: Angle and inferior 1/2 of external surface of the ramus of mandible
Masseter Deep Layer
O: Inferior margin and deep surface of the zygomatic bone
I: External surface of coronoid process of mandible and Superior 1/2 external surface of the Ramus of the mandible
What is the action for the masseter?
Elevate the mandible and assist the protract the mandible at the TMJ
What’s the action of the Medial Pterygoid?
Elevates, protracts and contralaterally deviates the mandible at TMJ
What’s the origin for the Medial Pterygoid Deep head?
Medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the Pterygoid process of the sphenoid, the Palatine bone, and the tuberosity of the maxilla
What is the insertion for the Medial Pterygoid?
Internal surface of the angle and inferior border of the mandible
Where is The Superficial head for the Medial Pterygoid muscle located?
Palatine bone and the maxilla
What muscle inserts into the articular disc and capsule of temporomandibular joint, and neck of the mandible, allowing it to protract and contralaterally deviate the mandible at the TMJ?
Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
What’s the origin for the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Greater wing of the sphenoid bone
What muscle’s inferior head originates from the lateral surface on the lateral pterygoid plate of the Pterygoid process of the sphenoid?
Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
