Muscles of Facial expressions Flashcards
Orbicularis Oculi
Origin: Medial orbital margin, Palpebral ligament, Lacrimal Bone,
Insertion: Skin around the orbit, Palpebral ligament, upper and lower eyelids
Action: Closes the eyelid
Frontalis
Origin: Epi-cranial Aponeurosis at the level of the coronal suture
Insertion: Skin of Frontal region, epicranial aponeurosis
Action: Horizontally wrinkles the skin of the forehead and raises the eyebrows
Occipitalis
O: Lateral 2/3 of superior nuchal line and mastoid process
I: Skin of occipital region, epicranial aponeurosis
A: Moves scalp backwards
Corrugator Supercilii
O: Medial end of the superciliary arch of the frontal bone
I: Skin of the medial half of the eyebrow
A: Draws eyebrows downwards and medially, produces wrinkle of the skin between the eyebrows
Levator Palpebrae Superioris
O: Lesser wing of the sphenoid bone, anterior to the optic canal
I: Superior Tarsal plate
A: Raises upper eyelid
Procerus
O: Fascia covering the lower parts of the nasal bone and upper part of lateral nasal cartilage
I: Skin between and above eyebrows
A: Draws down the medial angle of eyebrows, produces transverse wrinkles over the bridge of the nose
Nasalis
O: Alar: Maxilla, Lateral to the lower part of the nose, Transverse: Maxilla, Lateral to the upper part of the nose
I: the opposite side nasalis over the upper cartilage of the nose
A: Draws ala off nose towards septum and compresses nostrils; alar portion opens nostrils
( Flares and constricts the nostrils)
If the Depressor Septi Nasi originates from the incisive fossa of the maxilla and inserts into the septum and alar cartilage of the nose, what is the action?
It constricts the nostrils
Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi
O: Frontal process of the maxilla near the nasal bone
I: Lateral slip: the muscular substance of the lateral part of the upper lip.
Medial slip: the alar cartilage and skin/ fascia of the nose
A: Flares the nostrils (Elevates the nasal ala), elevates and protrudes the upper lip. A strong bilateral contraction wrinkles the nose
Zygomaticus Minor
Origin: zygomatic bone near zygomaticomaxillary suture
Insertion: the muscular substance of the upper lip
Action: elevates the upper lip
Levator Labii Superioris
Origin: inferior orbital margin of the maxilla
Insertion: the muscular substance of the upper lip
Action: bilateral contraction will elevate and protrude the upper lip. Unilaterally will curl the upper lip exposing the canine tooth
Zygomaticus Major
Origin: zygomatic bone near the zygomaticotemporal suture
Insertion: Modiolus, just lateral to the angle of the mouth
Action: elevates the angle of the mouth
Levator Anguli Oris
O: Canine fossa of the maxilla (just inferior to the infraorbital foramen)
I: Modiolus, just lateral to the angle of the mouth
A: Elevates the angle of the mouth
Risorius
Origin: fascia and skin superficial to masseter
Insertion: Modiolus
Action: draws the angle of the mouth laterally
Depressor Anguli Oris
Origin: oblique line of the mandible, inferior the mental foramen
Insertion: Modiolus
Action: Depresses the angle of the mouth
