Muscles and Passageways of the pelvis (24) Flashcards
Lateral Wall
Two lateral rotators of the thigh origninate from bony pelvis and insert on the greater trochanter of the femur.
both are innervated by muscular branches of sacral plexus
Obturator Internus m.
medial surface covered by obturator fascia
tendons exit the pelvis via the lesser sciatic foramen to insert onto femur
Piriformis m.
site of sacral plexus
tendons exit the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen to insert onto femur
Pelvic Floor - formed by pelvic diaphragm
a bowl-shaped group of skeletal muscles that partially closes off the pelvic outlet and supports that abdominopelvic viscera, especially when intra-abdominal pressure is raised (e.g. during coughing or straining)
Coccygeus
pulls coccyx anteriorly and supports pelvic viscera; wags tail in other mammals
Levator ani
elevates the pelvic floor to resist and/or raise intra-abdominal pressure (important for forced expiration, coughing or vomiting)
Obturator Canal
connects the abdominopelvic region with medial compartment of thigh
Transmits obturator n.a.v.
Greater Sciatic foramen
Connects pelvic cavity with gluteal region
Piriformis n. exits here
Superior gluteal n.a.v. pass superiorly to piriformis m., inferior gluteal n.a.v and pudendal nerve pass inferior to the piriformis m.
Lesser Sciatic foramen
connects gluteal region with perineum
Tendon of obturator interns m. exits pelvis here
