Male reproductive system (24) Flashcards
The male gonads
Testis
Testis
paired structure, suspended in the scrotum by the spermatic cords
Source of male hormones
mainly testosterone and site of spermatogenesis
Sperm are formed in the
Seminiferous tubules
Densely packed- average testis contains 400-600 seminiferous tubules
Blood supply by
testicular arteries and veins
R. testicular vein drains in IVC
L. testicular vein drains into L renal vein
Elongated structure on the posterior surface of the testis (uncoiled, 6m long)
Epididymis
Head (most superior)
Body (convoluted duct)
Tail (continuous with ductus deferens)
STORES SPERM UNTIL MATURE
Muscular tube that transports sperm from testis to the urethra during ejaculation
Ductus Deferens
The ductus deferens along with the testicular artery and pam-uniform plexus of veins are the main structures located…
within the spermatic cord which courses through the male inguinal canal
During the course of the ductus deferens,
no other structure intervenes between it and the perineum
The ductus deferens narrows and joins the duct of the seminal gland to form the
ejaculatory duct
Seminal vesicles (R and L)
densely coiled blind tubes (15cm) located posterior to the base of the bladder, lateral to the corresponding ductus deferens
The seminal vesicles contribute a viscous fluid
rich in fructose (to nourish perm) and prostaglandin fluid (to help stimulate uterine contractions) which form about 70% of semen
The short duct of the seminal vesicle joins the
ampulla of the ductus deferens to form the ejaculatory duct
A slender tube that arises by the union of the duct of a seminal gland with the ductus defers
Ejaculatory Ducts
Courses through the tissue of the prostate gland to open into the prostatic urethra
Largest accessory organ of the male reproductive tract (size of chestnut)
