Muscle Physiology Flashcards
Which of the 3 muscle groups is NOT striated?
Smooth muscle
Which muscle group has the HIGHEST energy requirement?
Skeletal muscle, then Cardiac and smooth has the least energy requirement.
Alpha motor neuron synapse
Synapse with up to thousands of muscle fibers BUT each individual muscle fiber is only connected (controlled by) 1 alpha motor neuron.
Z disc
Anchors for thin (actin) filaments
A band
Thicker myosin and actin containing band. DOES NOT change during contraction.
I band
Space between adjacent A-bands contains thin (actin) filiaments and Z discs. SHORTENS during contraction
H zone
Forms center (lightest part) of A band. contains MYOSIN only. SHORTENS during contraction
M line
Located in the middle of H zone and A band. Accessory proteins anchor myosin to M line
Titins
Elastic filaments that anchor thick filaments to Z discs (springs)
Excitation contraction coupling
Is the physiological process of converting an electrical stimulus to a mechanical response at the neuromuscular junction
Does it take ATP for a muscle to relax?
Yes! Thus rigormortus
Name the steps of muscle contraction
What is a Desomosome and what type of muslce is it found in?
Desomosome: Specialized cell junctions along intercalated disks between cells. Found in Cardic cells.
What is a Gap Junction and why is it important to Cardiac cells
Intercellular junction that provide electical conduction to allow beating as a single conductive unit.
