CNS.PNS. Flashcards
What are the 2 parts to the CNS
- Brain
2. Spinal Cord
Name the parts of the PNS
- Somatic
2. Autonomic (Parasympatthetic/Sympathetic)
Define the Axon Hillock (AH)
(AH) - the final site where membrane potentials propagated from synaptic inputs summated before being transmitted to the axon. (Where the cell body and axon meet)
What are dendrites?
Dendrites are the principal signal reception and processing sites on neurons
Define an Axon
Axons conduct action potentials from cell body to synaptic terminal. Allow for RAPID communication
Name the 4 types of CNS Glial Cells
- Astrocytes (Most abundant)
- Ependymal
- Microglia
- Oligodendrocytes
Define an astrocyte
MOst abundant glial cell in CNS, Star chaped, uptake of transmitters and K+
Define a Microglia
Rare, but common in injury sites/neurodegredation
Define an Ependymal cell
Line the ventricles of the cerebrum.
Define an Oligodendrocyte
Provide the myelin sheath in the CNS, allows for rapid transmission
What are the Glial cells in the PNS
Schwann cells, surround PNS
Grey vs white matter
Grey: cell bodies
White: Axons
