Biculturalism
the presence of at least two distinct cultures in a specific area or region
Switzerland recognizes biculturalism due to the strong presence of several cultures and the official adoption of multiple languages.
Assimilate
When an individual or group replaces most of their home culture with the new culture.
Immigrants moving to a new country and taking on the new culture.
Acculturation
When one culture takes on some of the cultural traits of another culture.
European countries adopted American trends after watching Hollywood movies.
Stakeholders
includes administrators, colleagues, community members, school board members, family members, and students who receive information on assessment data and growth
Ethnocentrism
The belief or view that your culture or society is better than any others.
Cultural Contact
when people from different cultures come in contact with each other
The Americans traveling through southeast Asia had cultural contact with many groups and individuals native to the countries.
Culture Shock
The disorientation and discomfort that often accompanies finding oneself in a totally new and different culture.
Prejudice
A preconceived feeling, often negative, about a person or group, and often prevents an objective opinion about the person or group. Sometimes considered an extreme form of bias.
Some individuals are prejudiced against people of any color other than their own.
Additive Approach
lessons, units and examples that represent a broader range of cultures and perspectives are added to the curriculum that is already in place
In a fairy tale unit, a teacher adds Cinderella stories from various cultures to her lessons.
