Strategic Competence
knowledge of how to recognize and fix communication breakdowns, or how to express ideas if there is lack of knowledge of the right word (verb, noun, etc)
The student showed strategic competence when she asked for clarification when she misunderstood what her music teacher asked her to do.
Comprehensible Input
Information that can be understood despite language barriers. Legally required to be provided to all ELL students under statute set by Lau vs. Nichols.
If a teacher uses comprehensible input for her ELL students, they can understand the essence of what is being said even if they do not know every word or structure used in the message.
Content-Based ESL Instruction
method that integrates English-as-a-Second-Language instruction with subject matter instruction
The teacher provides English language instruction and uses the language as a medium to also teach science, math, social studies, and other academic subjects.
Pragmatic Competence
knowledge of how to use language effectively in order to achieve a specific purpose in different contexts
A student displays pragmatic competence by appropriately apologizing, complaining, politely criticizing, making requests, etc.
Experiential Instruction / Experiential Learning
students have the opportunity to experience concepts that have been taught in the classroom firsthand and then reflect on the learning that has occurred to make connections from the classroom to the field

Risk-Free Environment
an environment in which one feels comfortable to take chances and try new things
The student felt comfortable asking questions during class because the teacher established and maintained a risk-free environment in the classroom.
Communicative Competence
the ability to communicate effectively in terms of grammar rules and social context
The student showed communicative competence when he appropriately joined in a conversation on the playground.
Sociolinguistic Competence
knowledge of how to use language and respond appropriately based on the setting, topic, and social situation
The student showed sociolinguistic competence when she adjusted her language between speaking with her principal and her peers.
Linguistic Competence / Grammatical Competence
knowledge of how to use the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of a language
The student showed linguistic competence when he used the correct pronouns when sharing a story about going to the water park with his family over the weekend.
Discourse Competence
knowledge of how to put together words, phrases, or sentences to construct long conversations, written messages, or speeches
The student showed discourse competence when he gave an oral presentation on the life of Harriet Tubman.
