Multicellular Organisms - Mitosis and Stem Cells Flashcards
Mitosis
the process of nuclear divion which results in two identical daughter nuclei (and cells)
Stages of Mitosis
- before mitosis chromosomes are long, thin and invisible
- chromosomes replicate to produce two ientical chromatids attached at the centromere
- chromatids line up along the equator of the cell. spindle fibres attach at the centromere
- spindle fibres shorten pulling the chromatids apart to opposite poles of the cell
- nuclear membranes form around chromosomes and become invisible again
- cytoplasm divides making two new daughter cells
tissue
is a group of cells specialised to perform a particular function
organ
is a structure composed of several different tissues coordinated to perform one or more functions
system
in human body (definition)
a group of related tissues and organs make up a system
stem cells
an unspecialised animal cell that can turn themselves into a variety of specialised cells when needed
thier function is for growth and repair
embryonic
stem cells
a type of stem cell that can develop into all cell types found in the human body
tissue
stem cells
a type of stem cell which is only able to turn into one or more specialised cell(s) in which they are located near to in the body
