Multicellular Organisms - Control and Communication Flashcards
cerebrum
conrols memory, personality, reasoning and concious response
cerebellum
controls co-ordination and balance
medulla
controls heart rate and breathing rate
neuron
the three types
- sensory
- inter
- motor
neuron
definition
neurons are specialised cells of the nervous system that conduct electrical impulses through the body, to and from the CNS (central nervous system)
reflex arc
- sense organs detect stimuli through receptor cells
- sensory neurons pass it along to the CNS
- CNS interprets message and a response is passed from the interneuron to the motor neuron to the effector
- the effecter then carries out the response
reflex action
A rapid, automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus to prevent injury
the message is not referred to the brain as it would take too long
synapse
definition
the space between the end and beginning of neurons
synapse
how it works
when a nerve impulse reches the end of a neuron, the ending releases a chemical which diffuses across the space between the neurons and triggers an impulse in the next neuron
blood glucose regulation
too much sugar
- pancreas detects increase in sugar
- pancreas releases insulin into the blood stream
- insulin in the liver triggers glucose to be stored as glycogen
- sugar levels decrease
blood glucose regulation
too little sugar
- pancreas detects decease in sugar
- pancreas releases glucagon into the blood stream
- glucagon in the liver triggers glycogen to be released as glucose
- sugar levels increase
