Multicellular Organisms - 2.5 Transport systems – plants Flashcards
What are the parts of the part that involved in water transport ?
Root hairs
Xylem vessels
Spongy mesophyll
Guard cells stomata
Where do water and minerals enter the plant ?
through the plant root hairs and are transported in dead xylem vessels
What does the xylem vessel consist of ?
xylem vessels consist of dead cells
What is the role of the xylem vessel ?
Xylem vessels are lignified to withstand the pressure changes as water moves through the plant
Where is sugar transported ?
up and down the plant in living phloem
What is phloem tissue ?
Phloem is a living tissue and is composed of 2 main cell types, sieve tube cells and companion cells
What is transpiration ?
the process of water moving through a plant and its evaporation through the stomata
What process is involved as water moves through the plant from the soil to the air ?
osmosis
What structures do water moves through the plant from soil to air ?
- soil → root hair
- root hair → xylem in the root
- moves up the xylem in the stem
- xylem → spongy mesophyll
- water evaporated from the spongy mesophyll
- Water vapour then moves by diffusion through stomata
What factors can increase and decrease the rate of transpiration ?
External factors
What does the factor temperature effect the transpiration rate ?
An increase in temperature INCREASES the rate of transpiration
How does the factor humidity affect the transpiration rate ?
An increase of humidity DECREASES the rate of transpiration
What does the factor Wind affect the transpiration rate ?
An increase in wind intensity INCREASES the rate of transpiration
