Life on Earth - 3.1 Ecosystem Flashcards
What are species ?
A group of organisms that are able to interbreed to produce fertile offsprings of simular types
What is a population ?
the number of individuals of one species found in an area
What are producers ?
are green plants that can produce their own food by the process of photosynthesis
What is a herbivore ?
Consumers that ONLY eat plants to obtain energy
What is a carnivore ?
Carnivores ONLY eat other animals to obtain energy
What is a prey ?
Prey species are those that are killed by other consumers
What is a habitat ?
A location or zone where an organism lives
examples:
pond, soil or rock pool
What is a predator ?
Predators are consumers that kill other animals to eat
What is a niche ?
A niche is the role that an organism plays with in a community
What is INTERspecific competition ?
occurs amongst individuals of DIFFERENT species for one or a few of the resources they require
What is a food web ?
A food web shows the numerous paths that energy can take as it flows through species in a ecosystem
What is biodiversity ?
Variety and abundance of living organisms found in a particular area
What is a consumer ?
Consumers eat other organisms to obtain energy
What is an ecosystem ?
an ecosystem consists of all the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which these organisms interact
What is a food chain ?
A food chain is one sequence of organisms through which energy flows when one organism eats another
grass ➡️ rabbit ➡️ foxes
What is a community ?
Community refers to all of the individuals of all of the species in an area
What is a omnivore ?
Omnivores are consumers that eat both animals and plants to obtain energy
When does competition in an ecosystem occur ?
Resources are in short supply
What is INTRAspecific competition ?
It occurs amongst individuals of the SAME species and is for all resources
therefore more intense than interspecific competition
