Multicellular Organisms - 2.2 Control and communication Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of ?
Central nervous system (CNS) and other nerves
What does the CNS consist of ?
Brain and Spinal Cord
What is the function of the Cerebrum ?
Controls Memory, Personality and conscious thoughts
What is the function of the Cerebellum ?
Controls Balance and Co-ordination of movement
What is the function of the Medulla ?
Controls heart rate and breathing rate
What do electrical impulses carry messages along ?
Neurons
What do chemical transfer these messages between ?
Neurons, at synapes
What can a response to a stimulus be ?
Rapid action from a muscle
or
A slower response from a Gland
What are the 3 types of neurons ?
Sensory
Inter
Motor
What do receptors detect ?
sensory input / stimuli
What does a sensory neuron do ?
pass the information to the CNS
Interneurons operate within the ?
CNS
which processes information from the senses that requires a response
What do motor neurons enable?
A response to occur at an effector (muscle or gland)
What is the function of reflex arc ?
In a reflex arc the messages may be passed directly from a sensory neuron, via an interneuron, to a motor neuron for a very rapid response
What protects the body from harm ?
Reflexes
What do endocrine gland release into the bloodstream ?
Hormones
What are hormones ?
Hormones are chemical messengers
