Multicellular diversity: Algae Flashcards
What evolutionary links do algae represents
Protist and plants
-Some classify green algae in plant kingdom, some classify it in the protist
What are the 3 main algae phylum and colour
Phylum Phaeophyta (BROWN)
Phylum Rhodophyta (RED)
Phylum Chlorophyta (GREEN)
Describe Phylum Phaeophyta
Phylum Phaeophyta (BROWN)
-Is large and diverse
-Is a species of kelp that can grow up to 60m
-Provides food and shelter to many marine organism
-Brown algae DO NOT HAVE TRUE ROOTS OR LEAVES
-They DO HAVE SPECIALIZED TISSUE
What is a holdfast and its functions
-Holdfast anchors the algae while a stipe extends from the holdfast
-From the stipe grow flat, leaf-like photosynthetic blades
-If you cut the leafs in a criss cross section it looks like a blade
Describe Phylum Rhodophyta
Phylum Rhodophyta (RED)
-One of the first multicellular species on earth
-Live in warm costal waters at shallow and deep depths
-Contain RED and GREEN pigment called PHYCOERYTHRIN
-Red algae can be used in foods (seaweed) and additives (thickener for ice cream)
Describe Phylum Chlorophyta
-Live in habitats such as festwater, salt water, sea ice, tree surface and furs of sloths
-UNICELLULAR AND MULTICELLULAR
-Resemble plants with cell wall compromised of cellulose
