What are the advantages of the copper coil?
Most effective
Provides LARC
Not affected by weight or enzyme inducing drugs
Can be inserted 5 days following UPSI or 5 days after ovulation, which ever occurs later
What are the disadvantages of the copper coil?
Risk of PID, perforation, expulsion and ectopic pregnancy
CI in Wilson’s disease and fibroids which distort the cavity
What is the mechanism of action of Ulipristal acetate?
Selective progesterone receptor modulator
Inhibits ovulation
What are the advantages of ulipristal acetate?
Can be used up to 5 days following UPSI
More effective than LNG
Can be used twice in one cycle
What are the disadvantages of ulipristal acetate?
Affected by enzyme inducing drugs
Breastfeeding women need to discard milk for one week
Need to wait 5 days before starting long term contraception
Use with caution in severe asthma
What is the mechanism of action of Levonorgestrel?
Second generation progesterone
What are the advantages of Levonorgestrel?
Can be used up to 3 days following UPSI
Can be used twice in one cycle
Can be used in breastfeeding women
Hormonal long term contraception can be started immediately after
What are the disadvantages of Levonorgestrel?
Less effective than UPA
Affected by weight (70kg+)
