msm Flashcards
What is the first store in MSM?
Sensory memory
What is the duration of Sensory Memory?
Less then 2 seconds
How does Sensory memory encode?
Using all the senses
How does information move from sensory memory to short term memory?
Attention
How does short term memory encode?
Acoustically (it stores words by how they sound)
What is the duration of Short term memory?
about 30s without rehearsal
What is the capacity of Short term memory?
between 5-9 items
What keeps information moving around STM without passing it to LTM?
Maintenance rehearsal
How does STM pass information to LTM?
Elaborative rehearsal
What is the duration of long term memory?
Unlimited
What is the capacity of long term memory?
Unlimited
What is the encoding of LTM?
Semantically (based on meaning)
What is it called when information moves from LTM to STM?
Retrieval
How does Baddeley support this model?
He showed that STM encodes acoustically and LTM encodes semantically (using similar and disimilar words)
How does Petersona and Peterson support this model?
They showed the duration of STM was less than 30s without rehearsal using the trigram recall task
How does Miller support this model?
They showed the capacity was 5-9 items by giving people recall tasks whilst stopping rehearsal
How does HM support this model?
He showed that STM and LTM were separate stores as he couldn’t pass information from one to the other
How does HM conflict this model?
He was able to learn new skills to his LTM demonstrating that there is more than one type of LTM and you can pass some things to that even if other types are damaged
How does KF conflict with this model?
His visual memory was unaffected whilst his verbal was impaired following a motorbike accident showing there are 2 types of STM
Why is WMM superior to MSM?
It shows that STM is not a unitary store and there are multiple parts i.e. VSSP and PL- MSM has a too simplistic a view of memory
Why is MSM superior to WMM?
It includes SM, STM and LTM whereas WMM only looks at STM meaning MSM is a less simplistic explanation of memory
How is this useful to explain dementia?
It explains that they have issues with attention so things aren’t getting to STM and they have issues both passing and retrieving things from LTM
How is this useful for education?
It tells us to focus on meaning during revision (and the iimportance of rehearsal) to pass things into LTM effectively
Problems with the research into MSM?
They use tasks like word recall lists which are low in mundane realism and might not tell us about real world memory
