MSK - The Femoral Nerve Flashcards
What are the nerve roots of the Femoral Nerve?
L2-L4
What are the motor functions of the femoral nerve?
Anterior thigh muscles that flex the hip joint (pectineus, iliacus, sartorius) and extend the knee (quadriceps femoris: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius)
What are the sensory functions of the femoral nerve?
Cutaneous branches to the anteromedial thigh (anterior cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve)
Terminal cutaneous branch supplies the medial side of the leg and foot (saphenous nerve)
In the first part of the anatomical course of the femoral nerve, where does the nerve descend through?
The psoas major muscle
After descending through the first part of its anatomical course, where then does the femoral nerve travel?
Through the pelvis to approximately the mid point of the inguinal ligament
After travelling a short distance after descending through the first part of its anatomical course, what is the final part of its anatomical course?
What does it then do?
Traverses behind the inguinal ligament into the thigh and splits into an anterior and posterior division
What anatomical landmark does the femoral nerve travel through?
Where is it in relation to the femoral vessels in this landmark?
Femoral Triangle
Lateral
What does the femoral nerve give off to the hip and knee joints?
Articular Branches
What is the terminal cutaneous branch?
Where does it continue to after the femoral triangle?
Saphenous Nerve
Adductor Canal
What muscles does the femoral nerve supply?
Anterior Thigh
What are the two muscle groups that the femoral nerve innervates?
Hip Flexors
Knee Extensors
What are the hip flexing muscles of the anterior thigh?
Pectineus
Iliacus
Sartorius
(SIP)
What are the knee extensor muscles?
Quadriceps Femoris
What are the first cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve?
Where do they arise?
Where do they supply?
Anterior Cutaneous Branches
Femoral Triangle
Skin on the anteromedial thigh
What is the last cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve?
Where does it supply?
Saphenous Nerve
Skin on the medial side of the leg and the foot
