Q

What are the motor functions of the femoral nerve?

A

Anterior thigh muscles that flex the hip joint (pectineus, iliacus, sartorius) and extend the knee (quadriceps femoris: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius)

Q

What are the sensory functions of the femoral nerve?

A

Cutaneous branches to the anteromedial thigh (anterior cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve)

Terminal cutaneous branch supplies the medial side of the leg and foot (saphenous nerve)

Q

After descending through the first part of its anatomical course, where then does the femoral nerve travel?

A

Through the pelvis to approximately the mid point of the inguinal ligament

6
Q

After travelling a short distance after descending through the first part of its anatomical course, what is the final part of its anatomical course?

What does it then do?

A

Traverses behind the inguinal ligament into the thigh and splits into an anterior and posterior division

16
Q

Label the cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve and where it innervates?

A
17
Q

What can happen to the saphenous vein in cases of problematic varicose veins

A

Stripping of the saphenous vein

18
Q

How does stripping o the saphenous vein present?

A

Pain

Paraesthesia

Complete loss of sensation of the medial side of the lower leg

19
Q

What may be indicated in patients requiring lower limb surgery but cannot tolerate a general anaesthetic

A

Femoral Nerve Block (in combination with a sciatic nerve block)

20
Q

What can a femoral nerve block be used for?

A

Peri and post operative analgesia for pateitns with a fratures neck of femur who cannot tolerate partuclar analgesics
