MSK pre Flashcards
Why does claw hand deformity arise?
Due to ulnar nerve damage
When is the ulnar claw most apparent?
When the digits are at rest
What affects severity of ulnar claw?
Where the nerve is damaged
Which digits are most affected in ulnar claw?
4 and 5
Which is more severe out of low and high ulnar injury?
Low
What happens at the metacarpophalangeal joints in claw hand?
There is extension or hyperextension instead of slight flexion
What happens at the interphalangeal joints in claw hand?
There is flexion or hyperflexion instead of slight flexion
What is the ulnar paradox?
Ulnar injury at the wrist (low injury) results in a more severe deformity than injury at the elbow or above (high injury)
What happens in foot drop?
Common nerve injury results in weakness or loss of dorsiflexion of the foot at the ankle and eversion of the foot
How does foot drop affect the gait cycle?
They cannot raise the toes of an affected limb during the gait cycle; the toes do not clear the ground, causing them to catch as they attempt to advance the limb during the swing phase
How may patients with foot drop adapt their gait?
Lean onto the other leg hiking the hip up
Employing extra flexion at the hip of the affected foot to lift it up more
Swinging out the affected foot laterally
All in attempt to let the toes clear the ground
