MSK imaging Flashcards
What is the primary indication for a radiography(x-ray)
looking at a high density structure
What are the pros of radiography?
very fast, cheap, portable
What is the indication for a digital subtraction angiography?
concern for blood vessel pathology (strictures)
What is the indication for DEXA?
bone density scan when concerned for osteoporosis and osteopenia
What are the risks of IV contrast?
processing by the kidneys can cause injury to them
What are the pros of CT?
affordable, quick (trauma), 3D image with good resolution
what are the cons of CT scans?
relatively high risk of radiation, if used, contrast could damage kidneys
Which modality is the best for a joint injury?
MRI
what are the pros of MRI?
no ionizing radiation and it has the highest resolution
What are the cons of MRI?
expensive and slow/time consuming, difficult for claustrophobic patients, cannot use with patients with metal implants
What are the pros of ultrasound?
cheap, fast, portable, no ionizing radiation
what are the cons of ultrasound?
not able to visualize structures behind bone (waves blocked) and bigger anarchic structures (waves scatter)
Which modality removes bony structures?
DSA
