Lab- approach to Cervical Complaint Flashcards
what are the three ways you can test for cervical radiculopathy?
neck compression test, neck distraction test, and spurling’s test
what are the three stages of spurling’s test?
compression, extension, extension with side bending
what are the tests used for thoracic outlet syndrome?
ROOs/ East Test, Adson’s test, Costoclavicular test, wright’s hyperabduction test
what does adson’s test look like?
you have the patient extend and supinate their hand on the affected side. The physician is going to monitor the radial pulse on the affected side. the patient will be asked to extend and rotate their head toward the affected side as they inhale and then hold the position and their breath
what is a positive adson’s test?
loss or change in pulse or reproduction of symptoms
if you ask the patient to look away from the affected side and there is a positive result, what is happening? (adson’s test)
there is compression of the subclavian artery between the anterior and middle scalene muscles
if you ask the patient to look toward the affected side and there is a positive result, what is happening? (adson’s test)
there is compression of the subclavian artery between the 1st rib and the clavicle
what does the costoclavicular test aka the military test look like?
patient is seated with his affected side elbow extended and supinated. physician finds the radial pulse and places their other hand on top of the shoulder. They will extend the patient’s arm and apply a downward pressure on the patients shoulder
what is a positive costoclavicular test?
if there is loss or change in pulse or reproduction of symptoms
what does the costoclavicular test specifically test?
the neurovascular entrapment between the 1st rib/ cervical rib and clavicle
what does wright’s hyperabduction test look like?
the patient is seated with their elbow extended and hand supinated. the physician locates the radial pulse and then abducts the patients arm above their head with some extension
what is a positive wright’s hyperabduction test?
loss or change in pulse or reproduction of symptoms
what does the wright’s hyperabduction test specifically test?
the neurovascular entrapment by the pectoralis minor muscle
