MSK - Anterior Thigh And Knee Anatomy Flashcards
What are the bones called in the lower leg?
Tibia and fibula
What is the membrane called that attaches the tibia to the fibula?
Interosseous membrane
What four muscles make up the quadriceps?
Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedialis
Which muscles are classified as aDductors in the anterior thigh?
in the anterior thigh: pectineus
in the medial thigh: adductor longus, adductor magnus, gracilis, adductor brevis
(obturator externus in medial thigh but only does lateral rotation of thigh)
What forms the borders of the femoral triangle?
The base is formed by the inguinal ligament, the medial border is formed by the adductor longus and the lateral border is formed by the medial edge of the sartorius
How are the femoral vessels and nerve arranged in the femoral triangle?
Nerve is most lateral, then femoral artery, then the femoral vein
What type of joint is the knee joint?
Synovial, modified hinge
Which muscle is responsible for the ‘unlocking’ of the knee joint?
Popliteus
What is a sesamoid bone?
A small independent bone developed in a tendon where it passes over an angular structure. The patella is a particularly large one.
What is the iliotibial band formed from?
A condensation of fascia lata
What are the static elements that aid in stability of a joint?
Bones and ligaments
What are the dynamic elements that aid in stability of a joint?
Muscle and tendons
What are the functions of the menisci?
- load transmission
- shock absorbency
- stability
- nutrition of bone
How many different bursae are there in the knee?
6
