Mrs Rex 1.4 - musculoskeletal system and analysis of movement Flashcards
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane which divides the body into left and right halves.
Frontal plane
Vertical plane which divides the body into front and back halves.
Transverse plane
Horizontal plane dividing the body into upper and lower halves.
Movements on transverse axis
Extension and flexion
Sagittal axis
Adduction and abduction
Longitudinal axis
Rotation
Articulating
Refers to the bones that meet and move at a joint.
Where does the transverse axis run
From side to side across body
Where does the sagittal axis run
Front to back
Where does longitudinal axis run
Top to bottom
Fast Effective Pressure Denies Harry Some Time (memory tool)
Flexion, Extension, Plantar-flexion, Dorsi-flexion and hyper-extension occur in a sagittal plane about a transverse axis.
Agonist
The muscle that contracts to create a movement.
Antagonist
The muscle that relaxes to work in opposition to the agonist, allowing movement.
Concentric contraction
When a muscle shortens under contraction.
Eccentric contraction
When a muscle lengthens under contraction or performs negative work and acts like a brake
