Movements Of The Body Flashcards
What is movement that straightens or opens a joint called?
Extension
In anatomical position, most joints are extended
What is movement that bends a joint or brings the bones closer together called?
Flexion
In a fetal position most joints are in a flexed position
What is movement that brings a limb medially toward the body’s midline called?
Adduction
Adduction of a joint brings a limb medially toward the body’s midline (‘adding to the body’)
What is movement that moves a limb laterally away from the midline called?
Abduction
Abduction moves a limb laterally away from the midline (‘abduct or carry away’)
What is movement that turns a limb in toward the midline called?
Medial rotation
When the joint medially rotates, the limb turns in toward the midline
What is movement that swings a limb away from the midline called?
Lateral rotation
Lateral rotation swings the limb away from the midline
What is movement that involves a combination of flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction called?
Circumduction
Swimming the backstroke requires circumduction at the shoulder joint
What is lateral flexion?
Lateral flexion occurs only at the axial skeleton. For example, when the head or vertebral column bend laterally to the side.
Example sentence: When the head tilts to the side, it demonstrates lateral flexion.
What do supination and pronation describe?
Supination and pronation describe the pivoting action of the forearm. Supination occurs when the radius and ulna lie parallel to one another. Pronation ( prone to spill it) takes place when the radius crosses over the ulna, turning the palm down.
Example sentence: When you hold a bowl of soup, you demonstrate supination.
Where does opposition happen?
Opposition happens only at the carpometacarpal joint of the thumbs. It occurs when the thumbpad crosses the palm toward the last (pinkie) finger.
Example sentence: Thumbs have the unique ability to oppose other fingers for precise movements.
What do inversion and eversion refer to?
Inversion elevates the foot’s medial side and brings the sole of the foot medially. Eversion elevates the foot’s lateral side and moves the sole laterally.
Example sentence: When you roll your ankle inwards, you are performing inversion.
What do plantar flexion and dorsiflexion refer to?
Plantar flexion is performed by moving the ankle to point your foot into the earth or stepping on a car’s gas pedal. Dorsiflexion is the opposite movement, such as moving the ankle to let off the gas pedal.
Example sentence: When you stand on your tiptoes, you are engaging in plantar flexion.
What do protraction and retraction pertain to?
Protraction occurs when one of these structures moves anteriorly. Retraction is movement posteriorly. They pertain to the scapula, clavicle, head, and jaw.
Example sentence: When you push your chin forward, you are demonstrating protraction.
What do elevation and depression refer to?
Elevation is movement superiorly. Depression is movement inferiorly. They refer to the movement of the scapula and jaw.
Example sentence: When you shrug your shoulders upwards, you are performing elevation.
What does deviation mean?
Deviation means to wander from the usual course. Lateral deviation occurs at the mandible during talking or chewing.
Example sentence: When you move your jaw to the side while chewing, it is a form of lateral deviation.
