movement of substance Flashcards
define osmosis
the NET movement of water molecules from a region of high water potential to a region of a low water potential through a partially permeable membrane
define diffusion
the NET movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a low concentration
can diffusion take place in solid?
yes, very slowly
define partially permeable membrane
means allow small molecules to pass through but not bigger ones
what happens to the animal cell when it is placed in a HWP?
the cell expand and burst
what happens to the animal cell when it is placed in a LWP?
the cell shrink in size and spikes will appear, it become crenated
what happens to the plant cell when it is placed in a HWP?
the cell expands = becomes turgid (full of water)
cell did not burst as cell wall is present
what happens to the plant cell when it is placed in a LWP?
the cell becomes flaccid and
cytoplasm will shrink away from cell wall = plasmolysed
why does cell in either plant or animal cell shrink/expand?
this is because vacuole stores food and water, thus the changes happened
why is there no chane in length of… (eg potato)
as there is no net movement of water molecules as there is no difference in water potential inside and outside cell.
there is movement but no NET movement
what is hypertonic solution
concentrated solution
low water potential
what is hypotonic solution
dilute solution
high water potential
