Movement of molecules Flashcards
What is turgor?
Refers to the pressure exerted within a plant cell
In a turgid cell, is the internal water pressure high or low?
High (pushing hard against the cell wall)
In turgid cell, what happens to the vacuole?
Vacuole enlarges (holds high volume of water/sap)
If a cell is turgid, what happens to the water potential?
Water potential is higher internally
In a flaccid cell, where does the internal water pressure act?
Pressure acts on the cell
How big is a vacuole in a flaccid cell?
Normal size (not enlarged or reduced)
What is the water potential in a flaccid cell?
Water potential is equal to external solution (no net movement of water)
What is the internal pressure of a plasmolysed cell?
Internal water pressure is lower compared to external
Size of vacuole in a plasmolysed cell
Vacuole size will be reduced
Water potential in a plasmolysed cell
Water potential will be higher outside the cell (net movement of water will take place outside of cell)
What is diffusion?
the random movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
What is osmosis?
movement of free water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration over a semi permeable membrane
What is active transport?
movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration using energy
What is water potential?
the measure of the concentration of free water molecules in a solution
Explain the water potential in an isotonic solution
the solution outside the cell has the samewater potential as inside the cell - no net movement
