Cycles in Nature Flashcards
In the nitrogen cycle, what bacteria is involved in decomposition?
Decomposing bacteria
In the nitrogen cycle, what bacteria is involved in nitrification?
Nitrifying bacteria
In the nitrogen cycle, what bacteria is involved in denitrification?
Denitrifying bacteria
In the nitrogen cycle, what bacteria is involved in nitrogen fixation?
Nitrogen fixing bacteria
When does nitrification occur in the nitrogen cycle?
When ammonia is converted to nitrates
Describe decomposition in the nitrogen cycle
- protein in dead plants + animals is broken down
- ammonia is released into the soil
Describe denitrifying in the nitrogen cycle
- nitrates converted to nitrogen gas
- reduces amount of nitrates in soil .˙. soil is less fertile
Describe nitrogen fixation in the nitrogen cycle
- N2 converted to ammonia in bacteria, used to make proteins
- when bacteria die, protein decomposes
- releases ammonia back into the soil
Where do nitrogen fixing bacteria live?
Small structures on the roots of leguminous plants
What happens when nitrogen fixing bacteria decompose?
Make soil more fertile by releasing ammonia which can be converted to nitrates
