MOVEMENT IN AND OUT OF CELLS 2 Flashcards
what are the four factors that influences diffusion?
- temperature
- surface area
- concentration gradient
- diffusion distance
why is water important as a solvent?
- transport medium in blood as digested food, antibodies and hormones dissolve in it
- provides medium in which substances dissolve in living cells and can react together
- reactant for photosynthesis and used for turgor pressure (in plants)
- moves in and out of cells by osmosis
what happens when plant cells are placed in water?
water molecules will pass into the vacuole, causing the vacuole to expand outwards, pushing the cytoplasm and cell membrane out against the wall with a pressure called turgor pressure
what happens when cells are placed into a solution of equal water potential?
water will move out an into the cells equally
plant cells in a solution of slightly lower water potential
the lose water, turgor pressure decreases, lose strength. they are flaccid
much lower water potential than themselves
lose water. cytoplasm + vacuole contents shrink so much that the cell membrane tears away from the cell wall. these are said to be plasmolysed
when plant cells are _____, plant is ______
turgid, erect
when cells are _____ or _______, plant is _______
flaccid or plasmolysed, wilting
