Digestion (Chem-Mech) Flashcards
what is digestion?
digestion is the breakdown of large, insoluble food molecule into small, water-soluble molecules using mechanical and chemical processes.
what is mechanical digestion?
the breakdown of food into smaller pieces without chemical change to the food molecules
where is mechanical digestion found?
mouth - action of teeth: cutting, tearing, crushing, chewing
stomach - churning due to muscle contraction
what is chemical digestion?
involves the action of enzymes which break down chemical bonds in the food.
where does chemical digestion happen?
mouth
stomach
small intestine
digestion in mouth:
mech: teeth break down food and increase surface area for enzymes in the rest of the digestive system to attack the food
chem: the enzyme amylase in saliva breaks down starch into maltose
digestion in stomach
mech: churning due to muscle contraction
chem: pepsin breaks down protein into peptides
small intestine digestion
chemical digestion by enzyme and bile
enzymes come from the pancreas and the wall of the intestine and digesting carbs, lipids and protein. bile from the gall bladder emulsifies fats by breaking down large pieces of fat into small droplets. this increase the surface area over which the enzyme lipase can attack the fats and oils
carbohydrate digestion begins in the _____, protein begins in the ______ and the digestion of fats begins in the ______
mouth, stomach, small intestine
the digestion of all 3 food groups is completed in the _____
small intestine
