stages involved in human nutrition Flashcards
ingestion
taking substances (e.g food and drinks) into the body through the mouth
digestion
breakdown of large, insoluble food molecules into smal, water-soluble molecules using mechanical and chemical means
absorption
movement of digested food molecules through the wall of the intestine into the blood
assimilation
movement of digested food molecules into the cells of the body where they are used, becoming part of the cells.
e.g glucose would be used for respiration, amino acids would be used by the cell to make proteins such as enzymes, hormones, antibodies etc)
egestion
the passing out of food that has not been digested, as faeces, through the anus
e.g fibre cannot be digested and so is egested in the faeces
what is mechanical digestion
the breakdown if food molecules into smaller pieces withiut chemical change to the food molecules
what is chemical digestion
the breakdown of large, insoluble molecules into small, soluble molecules. it involves thr action of ejich enzymes break chemical bonds in zhe food.
