movement (e3) Flashcards
what is the somatic nervous system?
system through which the brain controls movement and receives sensory information from the body and head and neck
spinal nerves
body
cranial nerves
head and neck
what is the autonomic nervous system?
neurons that receive information from and send commands to the heart, intestines, etc.
what are the two breakdowns of the autonomic nervous system?
sympathetic, parasympathetic
sympathetic
- vigorous activity
- increases breathing and heart rate
- decreases digestive activity
- most sympathetic axons release norepinephrine
parasympathetic
- vegetative, nonemergency response
- decreases heart rate and increases disgestive activity
- conserves energy
- releases acetylcholine onto the organs and serotonin (wake-sleep cycles
movement depends on muscle…
contractions
neuromuscular junction
synapse between a motor neuron axon and muscle fiber
what is released at the neuromuscular junction?
acetylcholine
fast versus slow twitch fibers
fast - fast contractions and rapid fatigue, anaerobic
slow - slower contractions and no fatigue, aerobic
what is the vagus nerve?
an extremely important cranial nerve in the parasympathetic system
electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve
- very similar to DBS, but less dangerous
- relatively safe, uses electrodes implanted to the vagus nerve
- can be used for: epilepsy, migraines, numerous psychological disorders
