Motor Neurone Disease Flashcards
What is MND?
Progressive, fatal condition with degeneration of all motor neurons but sensation in tact
What is ALS?

LMN only
Affects bulbar muscles of swallowing and talking

Flail arm variant
What is primary lateral sclerosis?
UMN only
Least common
Loss of betz cells in the motor cortex
What are some symptoms of LMN disease?
Hypotonia
Hyporeflexia
Fasciculations
What are some symptoms of UMN disease?
Hyperreflexia
Hypertonia
No fasciculations
Upgoing plantar reflex
What is the treatment for MND?
Riluzole can extend life by 3 months
What type of drug is Riluzole?
Na+ channel blocker that inhibits glutamate release
What is the most common cause of death in MND?
Pneumonia and respiratory failure
