Motor Development Lecture Flashcards
What are the newborn reflexes
- Rooting/ sucking
- Palmar (hand grasp)
- Newborn stepping -Declines at 2 mos bc they’re growing & getting heavy
- Babinski Reflex= Lasts 2 yrs of age (curling toes when feet are touched)
What is Cephalocaudal Progression?
-Development starts from head to toe
What are the Milestones?
- Fetal Position
- Hold Chin up
- Hold chest up
- Sits when supported
- Sits alone
- Stands Holding furniture
- Crawls
- Walks if led
- Stands alone
- Walks alone
When does the infant starts to hold its chin up?
-1 month
When does the infant start to hold its chest up?
-2 month
When does the infant start to sit when supported?
-4 months
When does the infant start to sit alone?
-7 months
When does the infant start to stands holding furniture?
-9 months
When does the infant start to crawl?
-10 months
When does the infant start to walk if led?
-11 months
When does the infant start to stand by itself?
-11 months
When does the infant start to walk on its own?
-12 months
What does the degree of Motor Development depend on?
- Culture
- Movement is discouraged in dangerous placesvs encouraged in safe places
What is the Neurlogical Maturation theory?
- Emerging milestones relfect a natural unfolding of biological plan
- Disappearence of newborn reflexes are attributed to cortical maturation, inhibition of primitive reflex actions
What is the Dynamic systems approach?
- Emphasized confluence of many factors= emerge of new motor skills including neural mechs, increases in strength/posture/balance/perception skills/motivation
- Both internal & external factors (gravity)
