Motivation Interviewing Flashcards
What is motivational interviewing?
A client-centered collaborative conversation style - letting the client come to their own conclusions
How does motivational interviewing create change?
MI creates change by allowing clients to discover their OWN reasons for change - it is designed to facilitate autonomy and intrinsic motivation
What are the five types of reflections you can use in MI?
Content reflections - paraphrase what the client has said
Reflection on feeling - elaborate and discuss about how you think the client is feeling about a topic
Amplify negative reactions - exaggerate the client’s perspective to exhaust negativity
Double-sided reflections - Another form of paraphrasing - ‘on one hand _____ , BUT _______’
Action reflections - LAST to occur. Proposing possible solutions to someones challenges
Why is TALKING about changing so important?
A key principle of behaviour change is the more someone talks about change, the more likely they are to attempt it.
What is the readiness ruler?
It is a way for a client to rate themselves on a scale of 1-10 on how prepared they feel for change
What are some assumptions to avoid when using MI?
This person ought to/wants to change
If he or she does not decide to change, the consultation has failed
Now is the RIGHT time to consider change
