Motivation, emotion and stress Flashcards
Order Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (from bottom to top of pyramid):
Esteem, physiological, self-actualization, safety, love and belonging
Physiological
Safety
Love/belonging
Esteem
Self-actualization
The Yerkes-Dodson law says this about the relationship between performance and arousal
In order for performance to be at its peak, there has to be an adequate amount of arousal. If arousal is too low or high, then performance will suffer
This is part of the arousal theory, which states actions are performed to maintain a proper level of arousal
What are the seven universal emotions?
Happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, fear and contempt
This theory of emotion says that physiological reaction comes before emotional labeling, meaning there has to be a physiological response in order for emotion to be recognized
James-Lange
This theory of emotion says physiological arousal and emotional recognition occur simultaneously, followed by a behavioral reaction
Cannon-Bard
This theory of emotion says that there needs to be a two factor recognition of physiological response and environment to determine emotion. (You have to consciously analyze the environment and physiology to determine what you’re feeling)
Schacter-Singer
This stage of cognitive appraisal (in which there is a subjective appraisal of a stressor) is the initial evaluation of the environment and threat
Primary stage
This stage of cognitive appraisal (in which there is a subjective appraisal of a stressor) is the analysis of whether or not the organism can cope with the stressor its encountered
Second stage
Of approach-approach conflict and avoidance-avoidance conflict, which one is bad and which one is good?
Approach-approach is good because it is a choice between two desirable options. Avoidance-avoidance is bad because it’s choosing between two undesirable options
Describe the main components of general adaptation syndrome (the sequence of physical responses):
Homeostasis, alarm, resistance, exhaustion
Homeostasis- baseline
Alarm- the initial reaction
Resistance- the body releases constant stream of hormone that allows for fighting the stressor
Exhaustion- the body can’t maintain that level of arousal, so the hormone secretion drops off
