process that accounts for an individuals intensity, direction, and persistance of effort toward attaining a goal

Two factor Theory (Herzberg)
there are certain factors in the workplace that cause job satisfaction while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction
McClellands Theory of needs
Achievement, power, and affiliation

Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
- people prefer to feel they have control over their action
- focus on beneficial effects of intrinsic motivation and less effects of extrinsic motivation
- need for autonomy, achieve competence and positive connection
Cognitive Evaluation Theory ( part of SDT)
when people are paid for work, it feels less like something the want to do , but they have to
SDT rewards
- extrinsic rewards used, employees feel they are doing a good job
- eliminating extrinsic rewards could improve intrinsic motivation
Goal- setting theory
Goals tell an employee what needs to be done and how much effort is needed
Goal- setting theory : promotion focus
strive for advancement and accomplishment and approach conditions that move them closer toward desired goals
Goal- setting theory : prevention focus
strive to fulfill duties and obligations and avoid conditions that pull them away from desired goal
Goal- setting theory : ethics
relationship complex, how far do we go if we want to achieve a goal, do we tend to do unethical choices ?
Self - Efficacy Theory
an individuals belief that he or she is capable of performing a task
enactive mastery, vicarious modelling, verbal persuasion, arousal
Reinforcement Theory
individual’s behaviour is a function of its consequences
external environment of the organization must be designed effectively and positively so as to motivate the employee.
Reinforcement Theory : operant conditioning theory
people learn to behave to get something they want or to avoid something they dont want
Reinforcement Theory : social learning theory
we can learn through both observation and direct experience
