What are the major job attitudes ?
Involvement, empowerment, commitment, organizational support, engagement and satisfaction
Attitudes
Evaluation statements ( favorable or unfavorable ) about objects, people or events
reflect HOW YOU FEEL
(Behavior + emotions + thinking )
Components
Affective component ( feeling), cognitive component ( thinking) and behavioral component ( action)
How do we measure attitudes ?
Self reported questionnaires
Explicit Attitudes
conscious efforts to achieve personal goals or adhere to the situation
Implicit Associations
outside of conscious awareness and control
Why do we have attitudes ?
- to make sense out of our environment
- define and maintain our sense of self - identity
- maintain good relations with others
YOUR ATTITUDES DETERMINE YOUR BEHAVIOR
Cognitive dissonance
lack of consistency between behaviors and attitudes
- because people like consistency we change either behavior or attitude to minimize dissonance
Moderating factors
- attitudes importance
- correspondents to behavior
- accessibility ( memory )/ knowledge
- presence of social pressure
- wether a person has direct experience with attitude
Job involvement
person identifies with a job, actively participates in it, considers performance important to self-worth
( supervisors resist employee involvement, think it will harm them )
psychological empowerment
belief how much they affect their work environment, competence and meaningfulness, and autonomy in their work
- understand what needs to be done to address customers needs ( Doll case )
organizational commitment
identifies with an organization, its goals and wishes to maintain membership
- implies loyalty and willingness to go an extra mile
What pleasant experiences matter for commitment ?

- organizational changes

- interpersonal relations
depends more on intrinsic factors
Employee engagement
involvement, satisfaction, and enthusiasm for work they do
Perceived organizational support
employees believe an organization values their contribution and cares about their well-being
