What is motivation?
The force or process which drives people to behave in the way that they do
What are extrinsic rewards?
Motivation from the inside
What are intrinsic rewards
Motivation from within someone
Non-pay methods of motivation?
Fear, environment, leadership, promotion, award schemes, team working, job enrichment, job enlargement, job rotation
What is a job enlargement?
Where an employer gives an employee different tasks by possibly moving them into a different department and giving them a variety of work to do
What is a job enrichment?
This gives more responsibility to an employee’s current job by giving them training to improve their job roles
What are award schemes?
This includes ‘employee of the month’ and can allows an employees work to be recognised.
What is promotion?
Promotion recognises the workers achievement
it can encourage workers to maintain their good work
Pay methods of motivation?
Time rate, overtime pay, profit-sharing, fringe benefits, commission, piece rate, bonus, salary
What is piece rate?
Payment by results, e.g. Baker gets 20p for each loaf he makes
What is PRP?
Performance Related Pay - where you get pay rise on your performance if you meet all the targets set
What are fringe benefits?
Compensation in addition to direct wages
This includes free use of facilities, a company car, paid holidays etc.
What is overtime?
Where you receive extra money for the extra hour you work
What is profit sharing?
Where an employee receives a direct share of the profits from the company they are working at
