Morphine Sulfate - Pharmacology and Actions
A
- Narcotic analgesic.
- Alleviates pain by acting on the pain receptors in the brain, elevates pain threshold.
- CNS depressant - depresses brainstem respiratory centers.
- Increases venous pooling, vasodilates arterioles, reducing preload and afterload.
- Histamine release.

A
- Respiratory and/or CNS depression.
- Hypotension
- Morphine sulfate allergy.

- May cause GI discomfort and Nausea
- May cause Wheezing

Morphine - Precautions and side effects
A
- Morphine causes neurologic and respiratory depression. Respiratory depression may be worse in patients with underlying lung disease or concomitant use of other depressant drugs such as benzodiazapines or alcohol.
- Morphine can be reversed with naloxone.
- Check and document vital signs and patient response after each dose.
- When morphine is given to treat pain, the goal is reduction of pain not total elimination of pain.
