Pharmacology and Actions
A
- Histamine H1 receptor antagonist of effector cells respiratory tract, blood vessels, and GI smooth muscle
- Has anticholinergic actions, making it useful in treating and preventing acute dystonic reactions to antipsychotic drugs.

- Treatment of allergic reactions
- Treatment and prevention of acute dystonic reactions from antipsychotic drugs

Absolute Contraindications
A
- hypersensitivity
- newborns
- allergy

Precautions and Side Effects
A
- usually causes sedation, but can paradoxically cause excitation in children
- has additive sedation effects if combined with alcohol or other CNS depressants
- can cause hypotension when given IV/IO
